Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the practice of using multiple
martial arts in competitive combat. By carefully combining different disciplines, the skilled MMA practitioner is able
to exploit the strengths and minimize the weaknesses of the martial arts he or
she pactices. Due to the nearly
limitless combinations of arts which can be mixed, each MMA fighter ends up
with their own unique style.
When the sport was originally brought to the United States
in the mid 90's, there were few rules governing conduct in the
competition. Since its introduction to
the US, Mixed Martial Arts competitions have grown significantly in regulation
and popularity. Despite this, the sport
continues to boast the unique combinations of fighting style and ability to use
a wide range of techniques which have made this combat ideology so attractive
to so many athletes.
