Capoeira

Capoeira is a unique martial art.  Though the details of its origins have been lost to time, most agree that it developed by slaves as their own form of combat and self defense.  To conceal their training from slave owners, this martial art was disguised as a dance, its practitioners playing to the rhythm of the music played by their peers.
Through the years, Capoeira has grown and changed a great deal, but many of its fundamentals have remained, including its connection to music and dance.  When two people are playing Capoeira, they are always in motion, dancing with the music and continually trying to trick each other into creating an opening.  Because of this, Capoeira has a distinct look and "swing."
Over time, Capoeira has continued to evolve, forming into many different groups, each with their own unique take on the art and way of doing things.  At Dunner's Martial Arts Academy, we are part of Grupo Maculelê and strive to familiarize ourselves with all major froms of Capoeira.
